On Friday, November 23, 2012, the long anticipated grand opening of our Youth Centre was held at 1:00 pm with over 100 in attendance.

AngajukKak Herb Jacque officially welcomed everyone saying, "while the community government will legally own and maintain this building, it is important the youth in the community have a place they can call their own". He then presented Liam Dyson with a key to the building officially handing the building over to the youth of Makkovik.

Albert Winters, Makkovik's Eldest Resident, and Irven Nochasak, Makkovik's Youngest Resident, was in attendance to cut the ribbon and open the doors for the opening. From there people gathered inside and witnessed Randy Edmunds, MHA, and Stewart Andersen, unveil the sign designed by the Nunatsiavut Resource Centre, and presentation and cutting of the cake by Amanda Dyson and Jake Andersen. Deputy AngajukKak Cyril Lane presented two outgoing councillors with long service awards, and Denise Lane, Ordinary Member for Makkovik presented a message from President Sarah Leo , and John Andersen closed off the ceremony with door prizes from Makkovik Inuit Community Government and EXP, the engineering firm who provided design and tendering.

Assistance on the design, layout, and type of equipment in the building were chosen with input from our youth and with purchased through funding assistance from groups such as the International Grenfell Association ($7,500). Also with assistance from Nunatsiavut Government and Tasiujatsoak Trust we have reallocated $60,000 to go towards the purchase of additional equipment for programming over the next couple years.

The goal of the Makkovik Hall of Youth is to connect youth with other youth. To learn, interact, and increase volunteerism in the community. It will also provide a venue for youth to pride themselves in being smoke free, and drug and alcohol free venue, for the young people to interact.

In addition to it being a building for the youth, it will also have a community workout room and an office for our recreation department. Thanks to the Makkovik Recreation Committee we have equipment in the workout room, which was purchased through fundraising and a donation from the local school.

A very big thank you to Nunatsiavut Government and the Tasiujatsoak Trust as well in providing the half a million dollars ($500,000) it cost to build this state of the art building. The building is a great success story for the community, by hiring local carpenters we lowered the costs, proved we have the skills in our community, and continue to promote such initiatives toward the employment of community members.

A final thank you goes out to the residents of Makkovik, our translator Katie Haye, April Martin for the cake, RCMP for escorting seniors, and Blanche Winters for catering at the grand opening.
